Opportunity Snapshot

You will join the leader in a dynamic and exciting market and work directly with our design community on emerging products. While our preference is that you have previous management experience, if you are a talented Engineer with leadership potential, this position offers you the opportunity to move into up a management role. You'll take a hands-on approach to leading and mentoring Engineers developing test solutions for front end modules and power amplifiers to be used in cell phones manufactured by Apple, Motorola, LG, Samsung, and other top companies; in fact, you'll find our products in about 40% of the world's cell phones. Your success in this role could set you up to purse a variety of career paths within Skyworks.

Leveraging your broad background in measurement technology and methods, you'll lead the development and execution of production-focused test solutions involving hardware, software, and both commercial and proprietary test equipment. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have at least seven years of experience with RF, microwave or millimeter wave measurement technology in a semiconductor environment. Project management and/or team leadership is preferred but not required.

Skyworks Solutions, Inc. is an innovator of high performance analog and mixed signal semiconductors enabling mobile connectivity. The company's power amplifiers, front-end modules, and direct conversion radios are at the heart of many of today's leading-edge multimedia handsets. Skyworks continues to post strong performance; in the quarter ended December 31, 2007, we grew our top line 11% sequentially to over $210 million, expanded our gross margins to nearly 40%, and delivered EPS of $0.17. We offer a generous benefits package, including relocation and full support of visa transfers.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • A BSEE; MSEE preferred.
  • Experience developing measurement techniques and bench level measurements from DC-6.0 GHz.
  • Knowledge of RF test fixture/board design and associated software tools, including C programming.
  • Experience with Credence, LTX, Eagle Test Systems, Teradyne, Verigy, or Agilent test platforms.
  • Familiarity with schematic capture tools such as OrCad.
  • The ability to oversee seven to eight Engineers and foster a knowledge-sharing environment among individual contributors.
  • Excellent organization abilities and strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present to groups.
  • Solid interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and in multiple locations.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities.
    • Experience with RF power amplifiers
    • Management experience
  • Preferred but not required:

What's in It for You

Career development -- depending on your performance and aptitude, you might follow a number of career paths, including product engineering, operations management, product marketing, and more. As evidence, this position is open because the incumbent was promoted into a new opportunity.

Stability -- while we do outsource some processes to offshore vendors, we keep the most interesting work here in the US. One of our competitive advantages is the fact that we are vertically integrated and develop and manufacture almost entirely in-house. The kind of work you'll be involved in is highly specialized and challenging, making it one of the few areas in the semiconductor industry that is not prone to offshoring.

Great work environment -- our work culture provides Skyworks with the business agility that breeds success. That culture is based on minimal layers of management, ease of collaboration, open communication, and an entrepreneurial attitude of taking well-calculated risks. Our Newbury Park facility has a very diverse staff of 500+ people, resulting in a vibrant interaction of ideas (and also great food at potlucks!).

Excellent benefits -- of course we offer the full range of benefits such as medical, dental, and vision plans and a 401(k) plan, but we also offer an employee stock purchase program, flexible spending accounts, education assistance (up to $15K per year for graduate studies), concierge services, and more. Skyworks is open to providing full immigration processing financial support.

Great place to live and work -- Newbury Park offers the suburban amenities of Ventura County as well as proximity to one of the world's great metropolitan areas (we're about 45 mile from downtown LA). This highly diverse area is home to many high tech companies as well as arts and cultural institutions, such as the renowned Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. With low crime rates and high academic achievement in area schools, it's no wonder that, once people relocate here, they tend to stay.

More About Your Role

If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.

The Newbury Park facility, Skyworks' largest plant at 220,000 square feet, combines a production facility with one of the company's two design centers. Production involves GaAs (AlGaAs and InGaP HBT) technologies supporting our industry-leading PA modules, although you and your team will be adjunct to the design center. In fact, most of the products to which you'll contribute will be assembled and tested in our Mexicali facility.

Reporting to our Director, Test Engineering, you'll join a program that includes teams for ATE, characterization and device validation, and mechanical engineering; each team is made up of seven to ten Engineers. For the most part the Engineers on your team will be acting as individual contributors on diverse projects. Your challenge will be to ensure that they not only utilize consistent technologies and solutions, but also that they pull together as a team to share insights, challenges, and solutions.

Overall you'll provide technical leadership and management of an engineering team that is responsible for package-level production test solutions for GaAs PA and Front-End Modules. You can expect to invest about 30% of your time in hands-on activities, mentoring your people and suggesting solutions based on your experience and knowledge. In addition you will work some projects yourself. Your specific activities will include:
  • Interfacing with design and product engineering to scope new measurement requirements and challenges.
  • Collaborating with program management and marketing to prioritize requirements against available manpower and resources.
  • Proposing and tracking improvements to currently released production solutions to improve throughput, product yield, and cost-of-test.
  • Creating initiatives to train and improve skills within the team, as well as to build team cohesiveness.

Keys to Success

You'll find ours a traditional engineering environment that is focused on solving problems and delivering results -- we'll leave the air hockey tables and take-your-pet-to-work-days to Silicon Valley. At the same time, to excel in this role you will take a proactive approach to promoting a spirit of teamwork and synergy among the diverse knowledge and skill sets on the team, recognizing that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
