Opportunity Snapshot

While other companies are "hunkering down," we're growing; in fact, we're adding this new position to keep pace with the demands of a highly competitive market. This position offers you the opportunity not only to gain experience with and visibility in diverse areas of our company, but also to showcase your leadership skills as you coordinate among multiple contributors. You will be one of the key people driving new products to market, focusing on GSM and EDGE front end modules (FEMs) and power amplifiers (PAs) used in cell phones manufactured by Apple, Motorola, LG, Samsung, and other top companies. Your success in this role could set you up to pursue a variety of career paths within Skyworks.

In this broad role you will act as a bridge between design and manufacturing, helping coordinate product launch from design through manufacture and test, and also supporting products once they're on the market. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have a BSEE or similar degree (MSEE preferred), solid experience in the semiconductor industry, and a demonstrated ability to manage among multiple contributors and drive projects and/or programs forward. You also will need RF knowledge and experience. We're looking for a proactive and driven professional with strong leadership abilities.

Skyworks Solutions, Inc. is an innovator of high performance analog and mixed signal semiconductors enabling mobile connectivity. The company's PAs, FEMs, and direct conversion radios are at the heart of many of today's leading-edge multimedia handsets; in fact, you'll find our products in about 40% of the world's cell phones. Skyworks continues to post strong performance -- in Q3 of fiscal 2008 (ended June 27, 2008) our revenue was $215.2 million, up 23% over the same period last year, and well above our target of $210.0 million.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues using data and statistical analysis (we use dataPOWER and JMP).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A strong sense of accountability and ownership.
  • Solid organization skills, including the ability to multitask and prioritize in a dynamic environment.
Experience with the following is preferred but not required:
  • Product engineering.
  • Power amplifiers/Front end modules.
  • Automated test equipment (ATE) and/or characterization or bench equipment.
  • GSM or EDGE standards and technologies.
You also will need to be willing and able to travel 10% to 15% of the time, visiting our Cedar Rapids Design Center, Mexicali manufacturing plant, and other locations.

What's in It for You

Steep growth trajectory -- our success depends upon staying on the leading edge of our industry, constantly expanding our portfolio with ever more complex products. This year we celebrated the shipment of more than two billion PAs since the product launched, and in 2008 we have sold over 40 million FEMs in the rapidly emerging Smart Phone market alone.

Great work environment -- you will enjoy a good deal of autonomy but also support from a talented and experienced team. The Skyworks culture is based on minimal layers of management, ease of collaboration, open communication, and an entrepreneurial attitude of taking well-calculated risks. Our Newbury Park facility has a very diverse staff of 500+ people, resulting in a vibrant interaction of ideas. We take a proactive approach to cultivating a pleasant environment, such as sponsoring employee recognition programs.

Career development -- you will expand your leadership abilities as well as your technical skills in this role. For example, if you don't already have experience with ATE or characterization or bench equipment, you will acquire enough understanding to plan, coordinate, and recognize issues in testing.

Excellent compensation -- we offer a competitive wage, a company-wide discretionary bonus plan, and comprehensive benefits.

Great place to live and work -- Newbury Park offers the suburban amenities of Ventura County as well as proximity to one of the world's great metropolitan areas (we're about 45 mile from downtown LA). This highly diverse area is home to many high tech companies as well as arts and cultural institutions, such as the renowned Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. With low crime rates and high academic achievement in area schools, it's no wonder that, once people relocate here, they tend to stay.

More About Your Role

The Newbury Park facility, Skyworks' largest plant at 220,000 square feet, combines a production facility with one of the company's design centers. Production involves gallium arsenide heterojunction bipolar transistor (AlGaAs and InGaP HBT) technologies supporting our industry-leading PA modules.

Reporting to a Product Engineering Manager, you will join a team that includes four other Product Engineers (PEs) in Newbury Park and four PEs in the Cedar Rapids Design Center. You will support GSM and EDGE FEMs and PAs designed in Cedar Rapids, partnering with Design Leads and Program Managers to bring new products to market.

You'll assume ownership of a broad array of activities in two key areas: supporting product launch and sustaining those products throughout their lives. While you will handle many of the details yourself, you also will coordinate with internal and external contributors to make sure we everything comes together within deadlines.

With regard to the product launch process your activities will include:
  • Coordinating prototype builds.
  • Coordinating test requirements and working with Test Engineers to ensure on-time delivery of cost-effective test solutions.
  • Contributing extensively to the characterization of new products, including owning the characterization specification, analyzing characterization data, and preparing characterization reports.
  • Ensuring new products are fully documented.
  • Interfacing with Quality Engineering and Failure Analysis to coordinate reliability testing and other activities.
  • And more.
Your sustaining activities will include:
  • Troubleshooting and resolving production issues.
  • Coordinating cost reduction efforts.
  • Overseeing upgrades and changes.
  • Resolving sourcing issues.
  • And more.

Keys to Success

To excel in this role you will demonstrate initiative and a drive to achieve results, through your own contributions and by influencing and motivating others. In addition, in order to be an outstanding Product Engineer, you will:
  • Embrace the role of "bridge" between design and manufacturing, in particular by taking a proactive approach to ensuring clear, thorough communication between and among all concerned.
  • Leverage your resourcefulness to achieve your goals independently, but also know when to ask for help from the Manager or your peers.
  • Stay on top of a large number of details, following up to ensure everyone involved delivers quality work on schedule.
  • Remain flexible as priorities change; you may arrive in the morning with a set To-Do list, but by the afternoon it may be completely revised.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
